Ponniyin Selvan: I, also known as PS-I, is an upcoming Indian Tamil-language period drama-action film directed and co-produced by Mani Ratnam and Allirajah Subaskaran under the banner Lyca Productions. It’s the first of two film adaptations of Kalki Krishnamurthy’s 1955 novel Ponniyin Selvan. Ratnam co-wrote the script with Elango Kumaravel and B. Jeyamohan. Ponniyin Selvan: I is set to be released on September 30, 2022. Ponniyin Selvan movie is planned to be released in Tamil as well as dubbed versions in Telugu, Kannada, Hindi, and Malayalam. Audio track and Trailer from September 6.

The film’s music is composed by A. R. Rahman, with cinematography handled by Ravi Varman, editing done by A. Sreekar Prasad, and production design by Thota Tharani, respectively.

Plot

The film is set in the 10th century and revolves around the early life of Chola Prince Arulmozhi Varman, who later became the great Chola emperor Raja Raja Chola. He was the most powerful king of his time in South India, best known for restoring Chola power and ensuring its supremacy in South East Asia and the Indian Ocean. The story begins with Vallavaraiyan Vandiyadevan and follows him on his exciting journey. He introduces the majority of the characters in the film. Queen Nandini, the wife of Chola Army Commander Periya Pazhuvettaraiyar, embarks on a mission to assassinate Aditya Karikalan and assist her husband in ascending to the throne. While Arulmozhivarman uncovers several secrets about the ministers’ and Nandini’s conspiracy, Vandiyadevan is assigned to bring the prince Arulmozhivarman from Sri Lanka to save the throne.

Amazon Prime Video purchased the film’s digital streaming rights for 125 crores. The OTT release date is yet to be announced.
