On Star Wars Day, Disney announced a new documentary series called “Light & Magic”, directed by Lawrence Kasdan, the Academy Award-nominated filmmaker, which takes viewers behind the scenes of Industrial Light & Magic, Lucasfilm’s special visual effects, animation, and virtual production division. Learn what inspired some of Hollywood’s most legendary filmmakers, and follow their stories from their first personal films to bring George Lucas’ vision to life.
The six-part documentary series, produced by Imagine Documentaries and Lucasfilm and executive produced by Brian Grazer and Ron Howard, will premiere exclusively on Disney+ on July 27th, 2022, with all the episodes available for Immediate viewing.
The documentary follows ILM from its inception for Star Wars in the mid-1970s to the studio’s digital innovations today and includes rare archival footage from the Star Wars saga, Indiana Jones series, Willow, Transformers, and The Abyss, among others.
The official Light & Magic poster, which was created from a stunning photo of Lucas inspecting Star Wars imagery and models, was debuted on July 7th.
The new trailer reveals all of the hard work, dedication, and waterslides that went into making the first Star Wars films. In fact, the documentary appears to be a Star Wars fan’s dream, as George Lucas and the original team transport us back to the studios where it all began. We’ll hear from those young and self-proclaimed “immature” designers who had no idea what they were doing as they joked and played their way through their workdays, unaware of how legendary their end result would become.
