She was raised in Canada. She used to sing classical, western, pop, jazz, and playback in a variety of languages such as Tamil, Malayalam, Hindi, Kannada, Telugu, Bengali, Gujarati, and Punjabi. In the film Chennai Express, she made her singing debut. She is currently starring in the film Walking Talking Strawberry Icecream.
She attended Turner Fenton Secondary School in Canada for her schooling and graduated from the University of Western Ontario. Jonita was always interested in singing, so she studied proper Western and Hindustani classical singing. Then she went to a few singing auditions and was rejected each time. Later, Jonita created a YouTube channel and began sharing her singing videos with Akash Gandhi .
